Crazy Raisin Business!

I have finally solved a puzzle that has been bugging me since before Christmas when I went shopping for my baking supplies.

I decided to make raisin and date bread before I went shopping, and I remembered several years ago buying a different kind of raisin that was big and had a citrusy flavor to it. I thought I was getting the same thing when I picked up some Zante Currants. Until I opened the box and realized that the currants were tiny baby raisins. Not what I was looking for.

I was wracking my brain trying to figure out what I had bought all those years ago, because the flavor was really lovely and I knew that it was SunMaid brand. I have to say that the internet is not very clear when it comes to the subject of raisins and what color they are. There are not a lot of pictures and it is really unclear on most of the sites I found which raisins are yellow and which are brown. I even went to the SunMaid site and NOTHING! Grrrr.

And then I caught a break! Finally I found a site that described a dark, large raisin with a full fruity flavor. This was what I was looking for and then there was an essay about these Muscat Raisins. Apparently, they used to be sold in stores by SunMaid in a blue and gold box, which I remember now. Sadly, they are no longer sold in small store sized packages. But I can get them from the SunMaid Gift Store of all places. $20 for 5 pounds. I will be making an order next year if not sooner. These are some really awsome raisins.

I feel better now. So glad that I had to write an LJ entry about it! Ha! I will be able to sleep better this evening :)

Muscat grapes are one of the best things on the planet! I haven't had the raisins, I must look for those on the web. My favorite wine in the world is Muscato d'Asti, and I use plain ol' Muscat wine for cooking all the time. We get the raw grapes around January/February and we eat them by the ton. I adore adore adore them.

Could I hit you up for the raisin/date bread recipe? My mom sent us a bunch of California dates, except that they are NOT fit for eating after the shipping... I need some date recipes! :P
