Random General Stuff

1. The United States Presidential Election: I am starting to get concerned with myself. I am having very violent reactions to people's posts about this topic. Of course, for the most part I am not responding, because I value my friendships and my friends reguardless of their political views. I have beloved friends who are Republicans, Democrats, Independents and even people who insist on voting for Nader (ETA) or Perot. (hi-fives hpca, hey at least she votes!) I have to say that part of the reason that I am able to keep these people close is that we rarely discuss politics. And the one Republican who I do talk politics with has more patience with me than any bleeding-heart liberal deserves from a self-respecting conservative.*Hugs ladytonks like I hug trees*

I am torn because I want to post about political type things here on occasion, but I don't want to get angry with any of my LJ peeps. I know this is totally my problem. I am the one who is taking this stuff way too personally. But I guess I just needed to get some of these thoughts out before I reply to someone's post in total rant mode. Or even worse, reply to a non-political post in a pissy manner because I am still thinking about the last political post that someone made. If that happens, feel free to send me an email and ask me what is up with my ass.

2. The Wold Wide Weather: My little sister is trying to stay dry through another hurricane in the Dominican Republic. She is very close to the Hatian border in her Peace Corps site. She already lost almost all of her belongings to hurricane related flooding once this year. She has all of her materials for the pre-school that she runs in giant ziploc bags now, that my mom made her take back when she came to visit earlier this summer. The last time the people in her village were putting thier goats up on her roof to keep them from drowning. She had to leave her dog behind with her boyfriend and the pup is recovering from being sick. I talked to her today and she sounded like that was her biggest concern.

3. My Big Sister: You know the one of psycho, homocidal, pyromaniac, ex-husband fame? She is engaged. He is the most wonderful guy ever. They have been dating for about 6 months and he is fabulous with my sister and her kids. Her life has done a complete turn around in the time since the fire and she is finally getting all the wonderful things that she deserves. It will be odd having another person moving onto the Compound, but it will be great at the same time.

4. Reading: I am starting the third book in the "A Song of Fire and Ice" series. They are long books and I guess the way they are divided by switching POV every chapter makes them easier to put down. I mean, I need to get some sleep sometime and I am totally a "read all night until I am finished with the book" kind of girl. They aren't my favorite thing in the world, but it sounds like that might be the best way to be. From what I have seen when I went poking around the internets, this guy takes his time writing these monster books and he has three more volumes to go. Eh, I am sure that between the two Jim Butcher series (Dresden and Furies) and Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels, I will have plenty of books to look forward to.

5. The Wee Man: I have pictures that I need to crop and upload and such. I will see what I can do about getting those up soon. Cause I know that is what everyone is really hanging around here for.

*tackles you*
*frets that I'm the one who pissed you off*

I *so* understand your worries. In real, acutal life, I'm *quite* the talker. I talk about EVERYTHING and I do it PASSIONATELY. It's just fun, for me, to share my ideas and hear about others and there is that whole face to face interaction that helps you to know when and who to say something to about whatever.

Online, it's not so easy. I CONSTANTLY stop myself from posting something that crosses my mind or that I'm thinking about or that I feel strongly about because I don't want to hurt/offend/whatever my LJ peeps. But I think that's what LJ cuts are for, you know....to say, Hey, I'm going to be yammering on about my politics/religion/bellybutton and you may not want to read it so I'm putting it under this cut.

But then, there is still the problem that something may be said and "taken" the wrong way. Like, I'm just saying this, I'm not saying this to take a smack at you, but soemone may interpret it that way and then it's just a big mess.

Anyway. You are one of the people in my LJ life who I have *such* respect for as an intelligent, thinking, GOOD person and I value your thoughts immensely. And I, for one, would be very sad to miss out on them....whether I fully agreed with them or not. 'Cuz I love you as much as a straight chick possibly can, ya know?

You were one of the people who pissed me off a little, and then I realized that I was totally being irrational. Because you are made of awesome. Period.

I have to agree that when I was at the rally in Springfield IL, I was even a little suprised that they opened it with prayer.

My problem is I cannot resist the LJ cut. Especially when it is someone that I always read everything else that they post and consider a friend. I guess my beliefs are just so ingrained that sometimes my first reaction is to have trouble understanding how other people don't see things the way I do. For some reason this time around it is just taking me a little longer to work my way out of the knee-jerk phase. (Maybe it is the way that children kill your brain cells. I don't think nearly as fast as I used to.)

But, the older I get the more I totally agree with you that this whole thing is a circus. People do what they have to do, or what they think that they are expected to do in order to get more votes. It is all kind of scarey on both sides if you ask me.

You know, I'm glad you told me that. I find that I can't resist an LJ cut either. Glutton, and all that. And besides, you never know when you're gonna run across some good "Twilight" wank or some such....

Sometimes I post things to be snarky....and sometimes, I'm just really, really curious about what other people think about an issue. They prayer thing? Totally snarky. Of course, almost *without* fail, someone comments who makes me *really* think (which most often hurts my brain). So many of my views have shifted since I became a part of this community, simply because I have met people like you, who I feel SUCH a connection to on a deep and real, fundamental level. And then I find out that there are things we don't think alike on. And to come from such a *small* place (both literally and figuratively) it's unusual to find that. And I'm challenged to step up to the plate and accept that there are people who come at ideas from a different perspective, and that I may just find that perspective is closer to the real *me* than I've always thought. I've been struggling for *years* and I imagine I always will, and in fact, kind of don't want to stop, with sorting through all I've been "taught" and all that I really "believe". I guess if I stopped that struggle, I'd be dead, you know?

I love you, Tory. Totally. And I'm more thankful than you know to know that I can be who I am in front of you and that you love me even if you want to smack me. :-)

And to think, it's all basically because of PORN!!!

I love you too poppet. I have comne to realize that there are so many wonderful people out here in teh internet. I think when we are young we just think that people who don't agree with us are stupid (my 17 year old step son is reminding me just how annoying the teenage mindset can be, try watching the conventions with him sitting in the room, his all or nothing idealistic thought process boggles me now), I am glad that I have come to an age where I can respect intelligent opinions even when they differ from my own.

Isn't the power of porn amazing????

And I haven't even read "Twilight" and I love to read the wank about it. Isn't that sad?

You could always go the filter route for politics, I think that's what a lot of people do. I just don't post about it because I feel vastly outnumbered here on LJ. I don't know where fiscal conservatives blog, but it isn't anywhere that I've found. Besides that...talk about politics always seems to degenerate into the same type of name-calling I see in fandom 'ship wars: "my candidate is better than your candidate and if you can't see that, then you are the world's biggest dunderhead."

Aug. 27th, 2008 02:39 pm (UTC)

Hi. Fiscal Conservative here. Wanna come for a sleepover?
Aug. 28th, 2008 08:40 pm (UTC)
Sure! I'll bring the popcorn! :)
Aug. 27th, 2008 03:42 pm (UTC)
It is so silly the things that make us forget that we are grown ups and cause us to act like junior high all over again.

I know there are other fiscal conservatives wround LJ somewhere, maybe you should start a friending meme ;)

*hi-fives ladytory back* Even though I've never voted for Nader but I did vote for Perot....lol....rant away, I don't mind....it's getting crazy out there! And I hug ladytonks too....she made of awesomeness!

Aug. 27th, 2008 03:38 pm (UTC)
yup Vi is thinking about having a big party in December, as the wedding is going to be family only.

You and LT should TOTALLY come :)

I think the hurricane hit the south side of the island. Have you heard from MD? IS she getting any bad weather?
Aug. 28th, 2008 12:26 am (UTC)
Did I read something about wanky "Twilight" stuff LOL?!

Does the big party have to be in December...isn't that when it's cold and snowy?!

Heard from MD....it was pretty rough but she's ok!
Aug. 28th, 2008 12:31 am (UTC)

Aug. 27th, 2008 10:03 pm (UTC)
Your good friends will bear with you through the political circus. I think they all understand that politics and religion divide more than they unite. ;)

Don't forget your non-US friends though - we still love you! Please send my congrats to Vi - I never hear from her, so it is wonderful to hear that she is engaged and very happy. All the best to her and the family

Aug. 28th, 2008 12:33 am (UTC)
I know she has totally dropped of the face of the internet.

I yell at her about that every once in awhile.

I am glad that I have my international friends. You guys have definitely taught me more than anyone about differing view points. Like how the US is not the center of the universe and all ;)
Aug. 28th, 2008 03:31 pm (UTC)
WHAT....we're not the center of the universe?! *big smile*
Aug. 29th, 2008 01:15 am (UTC)
Well, not technically the center of the universe since I am the center and I live on the east coast and all...
Aug. 27th, 2008 10:36 pm (UTC)
Violet 'can't remember number' is engaged!!!!!!!!!1 Crickey!!!

Send her my wishes!

As to US politics, I don't give a shit. I mean, it's not as though it is going to change anything where I live. Sorry...

Aug. 28th, 2008 12:34 am (UTC)
Oh honey I am glad that you could care less about US politics.

I will pass on your wishes to Vi!
Aug. 27th, 2008 10:47 pm (UTC)
Yeah, because my 'Move over, I'm an American.' attitude doesn't ever get out of hand for you...

Post what you want. Of course, understand that I might have to respond with the 'right' answer. With great military might. Who wear shiny Armani uniforms. And drink martinis. Using the poor as their coasters...

* starts Googling for interesting Biden sound bytes to stock my virtual arsenal *

Aug. 28th, 2008 12:28 am (UTC)
*snort on using the poor as their coasters....*
Aug. 28th, 2008 12:35 am (UTC)
I know it makes me think of the Dursleys and their glasses of mead knocking them on the head LOL!
Aug. 28th, 2008 11:07 am (UTC)
Well, they also make great step stools and door stops as well...
Aug. 28th, 2008 03:29 pm (UTC)
I'll take my martini very dirty....
Aug. 28th, 2008 12:38 am (UTC)
Yes but when you use the Cartman voice it just makes me laugh :)

I might get distracted by the shiny Armani.

Hey I am going to skip Bill Clinton's speech at the convention so that I can watch Project Runway. I do have some of my priorities straight.

*giggles at using "Project Runway" and "straight" in the same sentence*
Aug. 28th, 2008 11:17 am (UTC)
Looks like we will find out who is the forth in our 4 ring circus since McCain will be announcing his running mate.

* hums circus type music whilst crossing fingers for a full-on bold conservative pick because it will be more fun *
Aug. 28th, 2008 03:30 pm (UTC)
*pulls up a chair with her buttered popcorn*
